I work for a company that uses a type of mainframe software used by very

few companies in the US. Therefore the hiring pool for programmers experienced in this system is low and as if that wasn't bad enough the team we have doing it are not good. Someone experienced in IT is not going to want to learn it if they want further their career and inexperienced trainees are just going to inherit the same bad practices.

I program on the windows side which communicates with the mainframe. The system is the baby of the head of our MIS department who was one of the company founders who is rarely present in the office. The team that programs it is only accountable to this absentee director and because of this it is not unusual for them to refuse to do things that make our lives easier.

bad practices? like not validated the code the user has entered which is programming 101 among other things. it goes on and on.

Furthermore much of what my group does is make for the the incompetence of the mainframers. The kicker is we are the red headed step children in the view of the upper mgmt
